Cryo-electron tomography @ Cleveland
Principal Investigator
Yuqain graduated from Huaqiao University in 2025. She is currently a master student in the biochemistry department at Case Western Reserve University. She would like to learn some immune defense and in situ cryo-electron tomography.
Undergraduate
Dorian is a senior at Case Western Reserve University pursuing a B.S. in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Sports Medicine. His research interests include cryo-electron tomography and understanding how the innate immune protein mediate autonomous host responses to infection. Outside the lab, he enjoys playing volleyball and spending time with friends.
Undergraduate
Chelsea is a senior pursuing a B.S. in Neuroscience with minors in Chemistry and Childhood Studies. She is interested in understanding how cells detect and respond to pathogens. In the lab, she is currently learning cell segmentation techniques in the 3D volumn using EMAN2 and UCSF Chimera to study cellular structures. Outside of the lab, Chelsea enjoys spending time outdoors and volunteering in her community.

Postdoctoral Candidates
We are looking for highly-motivated postdoctoral fellows to study the host-pathogen interaction in the cellular context by using cutting-edge cryo-ET with allied techniques, including cryo-FIB/SEM and cryo-CLEM.
Interested applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in one of the following fields: structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, and cell biology. Prior experience in structural biology research is not required. To inquire, please email Dr. Zhu ( shiwei.zhu@case.edu ) with a cover letter describing your research interest, a recent CV, and the contact information of 2 academic referees.
Graduate Students
For graduate students interested in joining the lab, please look at our Biomedical Sciences Training Program at CWRU School of Medicine. Please submit application material that indicates that your priority program interest is the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, and Shiwei Zhu is the potential thesis advisor.
Visiting Scholars/Students
Please briefly describe your academic background and research interests to Dr. Zhu ( shiwei.zhu@case.edu ).
